​As you know, in August 2017 the Gulf Coast area of Texas was hit with Hurricane Harvey. Many schools across the Gulf Coast were damaged or flooded resulting in the loss of entire classrooms.

After learning about the number of displaced students and teachers and damaged or closed schools, I knew I wanted to do something to help. I decided to raise funds in order to provide funding to teachers to rebuild their classrooms.

Harvey Cat 4 Teachers was organized in September of 2017 to provide financial assistance to teachers employed by public school systems located in the Gulf Coast region of Texas to purchase quality in-classroom reading materials, and provide teachers with classroom supplies and educational projects. Based on my years of experience with PTO fundraising and assisting teachers in my children’s schools, we have come to know that this funding is not always available to teachers in the public school system.

In the last quarter of 2017 and first quarter of 2018, we were able to provide funding to 18 greater Houston-area schoolteachers, whose classrooms were directly affected by the hurricane, impacting the lives of hundreds of children. The funding we provided helped replace damaged computer equipment and provided guided reading books, books for classroom-based libraries and much needed everyday supplies.

Upon further reflection, I started thinking about the needs of my children’s teachers. Each year they spend money out of their own pockets to subsidize classroom supplies, provide books and project supplies, and visual aids for their walls to create a fun and exciting learning environment. Going forward, we plan to raise funds for new schools and new teachers as well as current teachers.
