We are continuing to apply for grants so that we may support teachers across the Gulf Coast of Texas!
Many thanks to everyone who donated to our Facebook Fundraiser. Thanks to you we will help teachers do amazing things next school year!
As you know, in August 2017 the Gulf Coast area of Texas was hit with Hurricane Harvey. Many schools across the Gulf Coast were damaged or flooded resulting in the loss of entire classrooms.
After learning about the number of displaced students and teachers and damaged or closed schools, I knew I wanted to do something to help. I decided to raise funds in order to provide funding to teachers to rebuild their classrooms. Harvey Cat 4 Teachers was organized in September of 2017 to provide financial assistance to teachers employed by public school systems located in the Gulf Coast region of Texas to purchase quality in-classroom reading materials, and provide teachers with classroom supplies and educational projects. Based on my years of experience with PTO fundraising and assisting teachers in my children’s schools, we have come to know that this funding is not always available to teachers in the public school system. In the last quarter of 2017 and first quarter of 2018, we were able to provide funding to 18 greater Houston-area schoolteachers, whose classrooms were directly affected by the hurricane, impacting the lives of hundreds of children. The funding we provided helped replace damaged computer equipment and provided guided reading books, books for classroom-based libraries and much needed everyday supplies. Upon further reflection, I started thinking about the needs of my children’s teachers. Each year they spend money out of their own pockets to subsidize classroom supplies, provide books and project supplies, and visual aids for their walls to create a fun and exciting learning environment. Going forward, we plan to raise funds for new schools and new teachers as well as current teachers. For more information, please visit our website at www.harveycat.org. We would love to add your business to our website and social media accounts as a community partner. Please consider being a community partner with us by making a monetary donation today. HC4T helped Mrs. Wofford's 5th grade class purchase supplies for their student teacher. We were happy to be apart of helping her get her teaching career started.
We were able to help Mrs. Otto's classroom recover from Hurricane Harvey by helping purchase books for their guided reading groups.
As the thank you notes and emails continue to come in, I feel compelled to share them:
Dear Harvey Cat 4 Teachers, Let me begin by thanking you again for your donation. My students were beyond thrilled to see the books arrive. The 4th grade students in my classroom and a very wide range of reading levels but have learned to love where they are now while setting a goal for where they want to be. The books you donated brought a new encouragement and excitement for reading into our classroom. The students couldn't wait to finish one book so they could get to another. Our school has a competition for each grade level and each class. The focus is on how many words a student has read (they have to take a test to prove they read the book). Since getting these new books our class has won the trophy several times (we had never won before). Students that refused to really read have begun asking for reading time. A new book might seem like a small thing but it can mean the world to a child. Thank you so much for investing in our classroom and these students. They will forever remember the time someone else cared. With gratitude, Mrs. Moreno With the holidays and bad weather, we have been a remiss in updating our donors with our donation activity! In the last quarter of 2017, we gave donations to individual classrooms damaged by Hurricane Harvey totaling $2,400. With your generosity, we helped 16 classrooms get back to learning.
